What Are Learning Communities?

Learning communities are residential setting which promote learning outside of the classroom. Within learning communities, students experience an environment where they learn from each other, as well as from programmatic opportunities. These communities are characterized by a high degree of student involvement and peer mentoring. They provide students the opportunity to further develop skills related to their own success while contributing to the learning of others.

What is Residential Education?

Residential Education is an approach to integrating curricular and co-curricular experiences at Missouri S&T. It involves providing intentional, community-based experiences which enhance learning and promote student success. Through these opportunities, students develop skills which might better prepare them for personal and professional success.

What is the Co-Curricular Experience of Residents?

The co-curricular experiences of residents fall into three categories:

Learning Communities- Community-based programs and residential services contribute to co-curricular learning. Program areas in learning communities include Missouri S&T's history and traditions, Academic Enhancement, opportunities to interact with faculty outside of the classroom, and strategies to assist students in college-related transitions.

Professional Development - This represents the Residential Life Department's efforts in implementing the Missouri S&T Professional Development Plan. Program areas include interpersonal and group communication, leadership, career development, healthy lifestyles, and personal/ethical development.

Community Involvement & Leadership Development - in their first year, students have the opportunity to access programs and activities which contribute to their personal and professional development. In their remaining years of residency, students should assume leadership roles. By becoming actively involved in residence hall and campus communities, students will have opportunities to apply things they have learned and to share their experiences with other students.

The Residential Learning Center (RLC) exists to assist Missouri S&T students in attaining their academic potential. The RLC provides students with resources for assessing and strengthening their study skills.  It also sponsors study groups, informal tutoring, and programs to enhance academic success. Through the RLC, there are a number of opportunities for faculty/student interaction outside the classroom. Traditionally, faculty members have been involved in Trig Week Review Sessions, study groups, and academic and special interest programs.
