Why Live in a Residence Hall?

Services
Residential Life offers a wide variety of services designed to support students in their academic and personal success. We offer Residential Learning Centers and Computer Learning Centers in the residence halls, trained professional and paraprofessional staff, a wide variety of personal enrichment opportunities, and 24 hour assistance for emergencies and maintenance needs.

Leadership
Living in a residence hall offers interested students an opportunity to become residence hall community leaders. Student leaders have significant responsibility for community development and governance. For instance, each floor selects its own officers; each residence hall complex has its own governing council; and there is a campus-wide residence hall government. Collectively, there are more than 100 hall government positions as well as opportunities to be a member of the various hall government committees. All of these oppotunities are supplemented by an array of leadership development programs and advisory support from the Residential Life Department's professional staff.

Activities
Each year there are literally hundreds of personal development and social programs offered to students of residence halls. Examples of these activities include:

  • The Last Lecture Series
  • Volleyball Tournaments
  • Charity Events
  • Dances
  • Trips to see the Cardinals & other St. Louis Events
  • Leadership Development Workshops
  • An Incredible Array of Intramural Sports, and
  • A host of other programs

All students are encouraged to play an active role in suggesting and planning educational and social opportunities for their community.

Peer Support
Peer support is an important ingredient for the academic success of most students. You will discover that the friendships you establish now will continue beyond your college career. A common misconception is that the residence halls house primarily freshman. While it is true that a majority of freshman do live on campus, nearly 50 percent of the residence hall population is comprised of sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students. Living on campus gives you ample opportunity to get acquainted with all levels of students.

Personal Freedom

Living on campus allows you to live your lifestyle with the assurance that your individual rights are protected. A variety of community designations and options are available to students with the intention that you will find a community to match your needs and interests.

All students are encouraged to become involved and connected on campus based on their interests. While participation in residence hall organizations and activities are not required, you are encouraged to take advantage of the variety of opportunities within a dynamic student community.
