Questions About Living in the Residence Halls

Please take some time to file through the following the questions and answers. Most of these questions relate to those most frequently asked to our Residential Life Professionals. If your questions are still not answered please contact us.

Why should I live in a Residence Hall?
There are many reasons, including the availability of services, ability to be a leader, involvement in activities, close to campus resources, peer support, and personal freedoms. More information is located here.

When can I move in?
The residence halls open the Saturday before classes begin; however, if necessary other arrangements can be made by calling the residence hall. Please visit our Moving In web site for more information.

Can I select my own roommate?
Residents may either request a roommate or be assigned a roommate. Roommate requests are honored whenever possible. All assignments are made without regard to race, creed, or national origin.

Can I contract for a single room?
Some residents live in single rooms. The number of single rooms is limited and are assigned on a seniority basis. If any single rooms become available for incoming students, they will be assigned in the order that requests are made.

Can I move to a different room or get a different roommate?
Residents may change rooms or roommates anytime after the first two weeks of each semester.

What is a Resident Assistant?
Each floor is staffed with a student paraprofessional staff member called a Resident Assistant (RA). RA's receive extensive training and are able to help residents deal with the challenges of college and living with others in the residence halls. Your RA also is responsible for managing many administrative tasks for your community. Do not hesitate to see your RA if you have any questions regarding the residence halls or the university.

The RA's in each complex are supervised by a Resident Director (RD). Your RD is a professional staff member who lives in your community. The RD's usually hold a master's degree in counseling or a related field and/or have extensive experience in residence halls. Do not hesitate to contact your RD for assistance. Their purpose for living on campus is to be available to help our residents at any time.

Who is required to live on campus?
Because Missouri S&T is committed to both the development of the individual and the academic success of its students, we require freshman and sophomores to live in university-approved housing. University-approved housing includes the university residence halls and apartments, and the recognized greek houses. Exceptions to this rule are granted under certain conditions, including:

  • Students residing with a spouse or immediate family
  • Part-time students taking less than nine hours during the fall and winter semesters
  • Students who are over the age of 21
  • Students who are parents
  • Students emancipated through their veterans status

More information is available here. To be exempted from the residency requirement, freshman and sophomores must have a completed and approved waiver form on file in the Residential Life Office. Waiver forms may be obtained from the Residential Life Office, 107 Norwood Hall

How should I decide where to live?
Two of the most significant factors affecting most new students' ability to succeed in college are their living environment and interaction with their peers. We recommend that you take the time to explore the question of where to live until you are confident you are making an informed decision. If you have any additional questions that we can help you with, do not hesitate to contact the Residential Life Office. We will be happy to talk with you at any time.

How can I get involved?
Each complex has its own Hall Governing council. These organizations allow residents the opportunity to have a voice in defining the nature of their living environment. Hall governments provide input about residence hall policies, food services, and renovations made to the halls. In addition, these organizations plan social events and recognize achievements of fellow residents.

The councils are made up of representatives from each residence hall floor/house. Each community selects its representatives at the start of each year. The Residence Hall Association is a residence hall governing body made up of representatives from both hall councils. This organization sponsors many of the major social and educational residence hall activities.

The Residence Hall Association also makes recommendations to the Residential Life Department regarding matters such as policy changes, environmental concerns and room and board rates. Floor/house communities hold regular meetings. One of the primary purposes of these meetings is to give residents a forum in which to establish their own policy guidelines and discuss concerns about their community environment.

Another purpose of community meetings is to plan social and educational activities. For more information about the hall governing organizations, please click here. If you're a current resident who wants to get more involved in the halls, please contact your Resident Assistant or Governor.

What can I do to have some fun?
In addition to the recreational facilities within the residence halls, many social activities are sponsored as well. A partial list of these events includes:

  • Fall Fest
  • Leadership Trip (A Weekend Workshop for Hall Leaders)
  • Special Theme Dinners
  • St. Patrick's Programming
  • Midnight Breakfast during finals week
  • Residence Hall Basketball Tournament
  • Snowball Semi-formal Dance
  • Swimming Pool Parties
  • Finals Week Study Break Snacks
  • Rolla Area Community Service Projects

Where can I park my car?
A limited number of parking spaces are available in the parking lots adjacent to the residence hall complexes. These spaces are assigned on a seniority basis. If additional space is available, it is offered to incoming students in the order requests are received. To request parking contact the University Police Department. We recommend that if you bring a car to school you make sure you have adequate insurance coverage.

What if I want to bring my bicycle?
Many students find it convenient to bring a bicycle to college. Bike racks are located outside the residence halls. Bikes also may be stored inside your room.

Can I have a refrigerator in my room?
All resident rooms are furnished with a refrigerator. Although the university's refrigerators may not be removed from student rooms, students may bring their own refrigerators provided they do not exceed 2.0 cubic feet in size.

Is telephone service available?
Local telephone service is included at no extra charge with your residence hall housing agreement. Students must provide their own telephone.

How does the cable and Ethernet work in my room?
In order to provide our residents with a greater number of services and a more delightful stay in the residence halls, each room is equipped with one cable jack connected to Rolla's cable system and two 10base-T Ethernet jacks which provides the resident with campus network access.

Wireless connections, besides being located throughout the campus, are also available in each of the residential complexes. Contact the Missouri S&T IT Heldpesk for more information on how to register your Ethernet card or connect to the wireless network.

Can I cook in my room?
Residents may operate microwave ovens with a capacity of no more than .8 cubic feet. Hot pots, popcorn poppers, and coffee pots may also be used, provided they operate with an enclosed heating element. Student rooms are not equipped to accommodate the electrical and sanitary demands of other forms of cooking.

What about my pets?
Only fish are permitted in the residence halls. Terrariums are not permitted.
